The famed "Nicene Creed" came into being at Iznik and the name was probably derived from its earlier name Nicaea. Iznik is situated south of Izmit on the eastern region of Lake Iznik. This ancient city is surrounded by colossal walls, a relic from its colorful past and has a mere population of 34000. This small agricultural town was also the location for the first Ecumenical Council of the Christian Church (in 325A.D.) Thus if you happen to be in Istanbul and are unable to visit this place, you stand to lose out greatly.

Though it is a small place to visit, Iznik will surely make its place in your heart as one of the most endearing spots.
