The city of Afyon, lying on the banks of the Akar River, also stands at the gateway between the Aegean Sea and the interiors of Anatolia. Istanbul lies 455 kilometers north of it whilst the Turkish capital city of Ankara is just 260 kilometers to the northeast.

The capital of Afyon province, this is a city of about 120,000 inhabitants. A quaint old world charm still pervades here and the people are warm, hospitable and friendly.

Afyon is traditionally the largest producer of opium in Turkey. Other agricultural products of Afyon are barley, potatoes, sugar beets and wheat. Livestock farming is also a major source of livelihood.

Industry is relatively scant here, the produce consisting mainly of carpets and kilims, cement, clotted cream, mohair, marble, sausages, pastrami and wool.
