History of Iznik
It was 310 years before the birth of Christ that the town of Iznik was founded. Later Iznik then known as Nicaea was an important Roman town that passed into the hands of the Byzantines. In 1078, however it was invaded by the Seljuks and after a three-century long rule Iznik came under Ottoman control in 1331. It was an important commercial city then for it provided the passage to Western Turkey from Istanbul. In the 16th and 17th centuries Iznik gained importance because of its beautiful ceramic products and especially tiles that is famous all over the world.
