There are plans to change the Turkish money, from the paper currency to plastic bank notes. Aimed for a 2006 launch, the plastic polymer bills are already in circulation in many South East Asian countries and even Australia with much success. The plastic notes have many advantages in contrast to the paper bank notes. Though the former is 50% higher in cost, nevertheless it has a duration period that is 4 to 5 times longer than the latter. These plastic bank notes can be washed with water but becomes ineffective if pinned. This feature is of special importance to the Turkish people for it means that one of their traditions gets lost in time. The practice of pinning bank notes to the collars of bride and groom is a well-known and well-loved tradition in Turkey, but the plastic notes may bring an end to it.
