Popular Summer Destinations
One of the major attractions of a summer vacation in Turkey is its beaches.
Ataturk Park Marmaris - A must for all. It is a family friendly shallow beach providing safe and clear waters. The waters are warm enough to allow swimming from early May to late September. The Atlantis water park has water slides, ring boats and bowling. From here, boat trips can be made to other coastal resorts. Four star hotel accommodations with kid`s clubs are available.
Patara Beach, Patara - Here you will get 9 miles of golden beach, Roman ruins and an amphitheatre half submerged in sand. Transport is needed to get to this place, as it is not within walking distance from any hotel. This isolation makes it an ideal place for romancing couples. From here, also you can take boat trips to other coastal resorts. Legend has it that Apollo was born in Patara
Iztuzu Beach, Dalyan - It is a lovely 3-mile long beach having the warm Mediterranean Sea on one side and Lake Koycegiz on the other. Protected loggerhead turtles are bred here. Nearby is the historic harbor city of Caunos known for it is Lycian tombs. Nearby also are the Riza Cavus Thermal Baths whose mineral and mud rich waters have skin rejuvenating properties.
Kapitas Beach, Kalkan - It has a golden beach with clear turquoise water, gentle waves and rocks jutting up from the sea. Families with children are kept away by a steep flight of stairs so that romancing couples are left undisturbed.
Sarigerme - This place has lovely sandy beaches complimented by a nice holiday village hidden in the pine forest lining the coast.
Olu Deniz - The Oluz Deniz promontory is a good example of the Turquoise coast gently sloping into the sea. It is very popular with children as they can walk straight into the beach after waking up. It is one of the best places for water sports.
You can also choose the cool climate of the mountains in Turkey. The Taurus Mountains invite you to ski in March or April. Visitors mostly come between June and August when a blue sky is certain. Spring and autumn are recommended for walking expeditions. These mountains being far from crowds provide the solitude walkers need.
The Besparmak Mountains are a national reserve and are of interest to nature lovers, hikers and photographers.
Saklikent Gorge is a romantic spot where you can relax by fast flowing snowmelt waters.
Turkey also holds a lot of historical interest and is home to many legends. You must visit the British Museum to see Xanthos` happy tomb. Xanthos is mentioned in the Iliad by Homer and was once the capital of Lycia. Today you can see an extraordinary amphitheatre in Xanthos with its own history to tell.
You can also visit the birthplace of Apollo at Patara or Cleopatra`s island near Fethiye.
