Turkish towels nowadays are mostly machine made and you get cheap duplicates of the original, so you need to know a few things before buying one. Firstly, you should always know about the material with which it has been made, though cotton is the best; many towels made of terrycloth are passed off as cottons. The second criterion is its weight; it should be measured as ounce per square yard. Though 14 oz sq/yd is the standard, sometimes 12 oz sq/yd is also given. Do not go anywhere below that. Finally, the style and cut of the towel also matters.

Towel production is a great industry in Turkey making it one of the top three suppliers in the world. Its main production centers are in Bursa, Denizli, Gaziantep and Kayseri from where there is an annual production of about 100000 tons.
