Turkish Flag Today

The Turkish Flag has become a symbol for the National War of Independence (1919-1923). The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the emergence of the Turkish Republic is what it embodies. The red is associated with the period of struggle, which spilled a lot of blood, while the star and the moon stands for what those sacrifices achieved-Independence.

The Flag is revered in Turkey and the sanctity is upheld with a guideline of do's and don'ts. Flag burning is seen as a punishable offence while using the insignia on T-shirts and other apparels is strictly prohibited.
